VOLLEYBALL: SMBC IN A FESTIVE MOOD.

After a fall season that resulted in disappointing conclusions to the high school careers of several of the area's top girls' volleyball players This is a list of top international volleyball players.

SMBC, featuring Angela Hupp (Paraclete of Lancaster/Cal State Northridge), Taryn Robertson (Valencia/UC Irvine), Emily Johnson (L.A. Baptist of North Hills/Gonzaga) and Christine Vaughen (Simi Valley/North Carolina) among its list of college-bound players, is seeded third in the 18s entering pool play, which begins at 8 a.m. today.

With Jackie Beeton (Flintridge Sacred Heart of LaCanada Flintridge/Redlands), Lauren Wells (Valencia/Cal State Dominguez Hills), Crystal Evans (Grace Brethren of Simi Valley/Cal Lutheran) and Tara Henn (Quartz Hill/Pierce College), along with Thousand Oaks graduate Kristen Berthiaume, providing depth, SMBC should improve on its past two 11th-place finishes.

SMBC's other 18-under team, with four players from Hart of Newhall and two from Simi Valley on its roster, is seeded 64th.

SMBC's 17-under team, which includes three athletes from Saugus and two from Harvard-Westlake among its list of 10 area players, is seeded sixth. The club's top 16-under team -- with four players from Harvard-Westlake -- is eighth. Last year, SMBC's 17-under team placed ninth and its 16-under team took fifth.

Sports Shack's 16-1 team, featuring Flintridge Sacred Heart setter Samantha Orlandini, is seeded fifth. Sports Shack's top 18-under team, which won the competition last year, is seeded 21st.

Championship matches for the 14-under through 18-under divisions are scheduled for Thursday at Nevada's Lawlor Center.
