VOLKSWAGEN'S ALL-NEW GOLF III AND JETTA III ARRIVE IN SOUTHEAST

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling it one of the most important new product launches in its history, Volkswagen United States, Inc. today announced the arrival of its completely redesigned Golf III and Jetta III models at retail facilities in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
The 1994 Golf III GL comes to the Southeast as the top-selling car model in the world. Its European counterpart was launched in Europe in 1992 and has already recorded international sales of 1.4 million. It was sold briefly as a 1993 model in some areas of the U.S.
Volkswagen's Jetta has perennially been the best-selling European nameplate in America.
The 1994 Jetta III GL, which was sold in limited volume in select states as a 1993 model, has a new aerodynamic style; a more powerful 2.0-liter, 115-horsepower fuel-injected engine with more torque; advanced safety engineering; improved handling and a new, more user- friendly interior.
Later this year, Volkswagen will also offer a high-performance six- cylinder Jetta III GLX model and luxury packed GLS. These 1994 models, along with the 1994 Jetta III GL and Golf III GL, will come standard with driver and passenger airbags starting later this fall.
Standard features on the 1994 Jetta III GL and Golf III GL include power central locking, an anti-theft alarm system, power steering and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes.
Another standard feature not available in the competition is Volkswagen's new ground-breaking customer care program -- Protection Plus. It includes the industry's longest limited powertrain warranty at 10 years or 100,000 miles, a two-year, 24-hour roadside assistance program and complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles. Corrosion protection is six years without mileage restrictions and the bumper-to-bumper limited warranty is two years or 24,000 miles.
The Volkswagen Golf III GL also has a more powerful engine, a new ergonomically designed interior, better handling characteristics and advanced safety engineering. The all-new body styles offer improved aerodynamics that optimize fuel efficiency, reduce wind noise, and contribute to improved handling.
The new interiors on the Golf III and Jetta III are roomier and feature a user-friendly layout with a more upscale, European look, complemented by a host of new comfort features.
Cargo room -- always a Jetta strength -- remains best in class at 15 cubic feet. The Jetta III's low lift-over trunk is larger than those found in many midsize offerings, including the Lexus LS 400 and the Mercedes 300 E.
Popular options available on the new Golf III GL and Jetta III GL include CFC-free air conditioning, a premium eight-speaker stereo with CD capability and a power glass moonroof with sunshade. Also available is a new electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission, designed to sense the driving style of the operator and adjust shift points accordingly.
The previous-generation Golf and Jetta were among the safest small cars in the world, according to numerous independent safety studies. Volkswagen has taken this record of safety and improved on it. Both the Golf III and Jetta III feature improved side-impact protection and front "crumple" zones designed to work in conjunction with a stronger safety cage construction to diffuse energy from the impact, while providing maximum protection for the occupants.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price on the 1994 Jetta III GL is $13,125, and the MSRP on the 1994 Golf III GL is $11,900.
