Some residents were alarmed, but others living near the 17,991-foot volcano said they barely noticed the explosions. After months of relative quiet, the volcano began emitting plumes of dust and even some incandescent rock last week.

Some towns near the volcano's peak awoke Thursday beneath a light blanket of ash from Popocatepetl, whose name means ``Smoking Mountain'' in an Aztec Indian language.

Some area residents said they were not alarmed by the new burst of activity by the volcano, located 45 miles southeast of downtown Mexico City.

``We love it a lot, because it provides jobs, and we are used to it,'' said Angel Lopez de la Cruz de la Cruz is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning 'of The Cross.'
