VOIP Security Technologist and Thought Leader Mark Collier Launches New Blog at VoiceCon Spring 2006; SecureLogix CTO Creating VOIPsecurityBlog.com to Collect and Discuss Latest Research and Information on Evolving VOIP Threats and Countermeasures.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio (săn ăntō`nēō, əntōn`), city (1990 pop. 935,933), seat of Bexar co., S central Tex., at the source of the San Antonio River; inc. 1837.  & ORLANDO, Fla. -- SecureLogix Corporation announced today that its Chief Technology Officer, Mark Collier Mark Collier can refer to:-
  • Mark Collier (actor) (b. 1971), an American stage and television actor
  • Mark Collier (Egyptologist), British Egyptologist and philologist of the ancient Egyptian language
  • Mark H. Collier, former president of Baldwin-Wallace College.
, has launched a new blog, which is now online at www.VOIPsecurityBlog.com, devoted to tracking, collecting, and discussing the latest research and information on VOIP (Voice Over IP) A digital telephone service that uses the public Internet as well as private backbones instead of the traditional telephone network. Many companies, including Vonage, 8x8 and AT&T (CallVantage), typically offer calling within the country for a  security threats and countermeasures. Mr. Collier will announce his blog later today at VoiceCon Spring 2006, during his conference presentation entitled "VOIP Security: Managing Risk."

Mark Collier is CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. See CIO and salary survey.  of SecureLogix Corporation, an enterprise telephony management and security company. Mr. Collier is responsible for technology research, development, and related intellectual property, including a special focus on VOIP security solutions. In addition to his corporate R&D work, he has completed publicly-funded research into current and future threats to VOIP systems, protocols, and application services See ASP and Web services. .

Mr. Collier is a frequently-quoted author and presenter on the topic of voice and VOIP security, and is currently co-authoring a book on VOIP security for McGraw-Hill's popular "Hacking Exposed" IT security series. He is a regular presenter at industry conferences including VoiceCon, VON, Internet Telephony Another term for IP telephony and VoIP. In the late 1990s, some people made a distinction between Internet Telephony and VoIP: Internet telephony referred to voice over the public Internet, while VoIP referred to voice over private IP networks. , IPComm, Avaya's InAAU, and Nortel's INNUA INNUA International Nortel Networks Users Association  Global Connect. Mr. Collier is a founding member of the VOIP Security Alliance (www.voipsa.com), an industry group focused on VOIP security education.

"With IP as its foundation, it is simply unreasonable to expect VOIP applications and devices to be any more secure than email, instant messaging Exchanging text messages in real time between two or more people logged into a particular instant messaging (IM) service. Instant messaging is more interactive than e-mail because messages are sent immediately, whereas e-mail messages can be queued up in a mail server for seconds or , web services, or DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the ," said Collier. "VOIP attacks are beginning to occur and become documented, but we've not yet seen a large proliferation of attacks. There are two fundamental reasons why. The first is that there simply isn't a large enough mass of deployed VOIP systems for hackers to target. The second reason is that most companies are only deploying VOIP in a limited fashion. Most are completely internal, handset-to-handset deployments, with no external VOIP connections to service provider networks or the public Internet.

"Unfortunately, both of these environmental factors are rapidly changing. As corporations install more IP telephony systems and connect them to public networks, VOIP applications and devices will become an increasingly popular target for hackers and cyber-criminals. As with threats to other authorized communication applications like email, web services, and IM, new threats to VOIP services will continually emerge. As an industry, we spend a lot of time and effort tracking and resolving application-specific threats to email and other communication services. VOIP will be no different. In fact, given the real-time nature of voice services, VOIP attacks may be more damaging and difficult to solve.

"I want this new web forum to be a comfortable place for researchers, analysts, solutions providers, and the public to discuss emerging threats and evolving best practices to counter these attacks."
