, Inc. and PanAmSat Corp. are enabling movie studios and TV programmers to stock cable's VOD servers with movies and programming. Debuted today, VODcast is a fully-automated, secure and rapid `pitcher-catcher' distribution system for VOD content.

Based on SeaChange's highly-successful SPOTcast satellite systems, VODcast today is delivering Intertainer, Inc.'s movies and programming for Comcast VOD sites. With VODcast shuttling fresh Intertainer content into SeaChange's VOD Systems, Comcast is a stunning example of SeaChange's ability to simplify on-demand television.

For the first time, VODcast gives content providers full control of their asset libraries in cable headends and provides reports on content use and system performance. Further, 128-bit encryption algorithms A formula used to turn ordinary data, or "plaintext," into a secret code known as "ciphertext." The larger the key (the more bits), the greater the number of potential patterns can be created, thus making  extend the highest level of content protection throughout the distribution process. VODcast works with all CableLabs-compliant VOD systems.

"Cable operators and content providers are committed to filling the VOD pipeline. As the volume builds, it's imperative to move content rapidly and with end-to-end automation - minimizing human involvement," said Bill Styslinger, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "VODcast makes content distribution simple, reliable and secure and gives the owners and originators of movies and television programming a cost-effective path to VOD."

VOD is an emerging force in cable television. On-demand services are live in dozens of television markets reaching millions of subscribers. Already, cable operators such as Adelphia, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner have progressed beyond movies-on-demand to include subscription VOD, enthusiast VOD categories like those presented by MagRack and `virtual channel' extensions of cable networks. Free-on-demand services are on the way. VODcast opens the door to the VOD distribution window, giving content producers access that would be unattainable if left to video tapes and manual shipping. From a single point of origination, content providers can feed any number of locations with VODcast.

How VODcast works

SeaChange's VODcast Management Suite is comprised of Distributors, Uplink Servers and Receivers, proven technologies from the SeaChange SPOTcast satellite ad delivery system. SPOTcast today works in more than 600 cable headends for customers such as National Cable Communications and Cox Communications Cox Communications is a privately owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises providing digital cable television and telecommunications services in the United States. It is the third-largest[2] cable television provider in the United States, serving more than 6. .

Located at content origination sites, the VODcast Management Suite encodes content and metadata into MPEG-2 format. Metadata can include a synopsis of the content, movie posters, pricing or rules for content use. Content is stored and scheduled for transmission on VODcast Distributors. Open application programming interfaces allow VODcast to integrate seamlessly with any type of server system or asset management system used by video content originators and VOD service providers.

for simultaneous multicast delivery of content to any number of cable master control centers or headends. Through its global system of satellites, teleports and fiber links, PanAmSat reaches 98 percent of the world's population. Providing the highest level of video copy and stream protection, VODcast incorporates 128-bit encryption, the same methodology that ensures security in personal banking.

VOD Content `Condominums'

At the receiving end of the satellite transmission, cable television operations have VODcast Receivers (two rack units A unit of measurement of the height of a rack-mounted device. One rack unit, or RU, is 1.75". See rack mounted.  in height) to store content prior to loading onto VOD server systems. Scalable VODcast Receivers can accommodate content traffic from multiple sources, providing virtual `content condominiums' in cable headends, minimizing the up-front capital cost to content providers, while keeping a small footprint in cable operations. For example, leveraging logical disk drive partitioning and RAID striping Interleaving or multiplexing data to increase speed. See disk striping.
