It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the operations into a pan-European business unit: VNU Business Online Europe. As currently constituted, the new unit has online operations in the U.K., the Netherlands, Italy, France, Belgium and Spain. It also operates VNUnet.com. a pan-European Web site with several language versions for IT users and buyers, and a variety of IT recruitment 'jobworld' sites.
