"This latest release of UniVerse ensures maximum portability and provides a consistent application platform across operating system environments," said Robert M. Morrill, chairman, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of VMARK. "Application developers can now design and build an application on a Windows NT server and deploy the same application with UNIX. Value added resellers (VARs) have a generic UniVerse platform scaleable from the smallest workgroup to an enterprise-wide server; and users will be able to significantly reduce their development effort and increase overall product quality," he said.

"UniVerse has been a powerful, versatile, and widely- recognized product from the outset," said Jeffrey A. Spotts, VMARK's vice president of worldwide marketing.

"UniVerse Release 9 is a complete database engine that observes all industry standards and offers a full suite of tools and services," Spotts continued. "It provides an ability to add development and deployment options, providing our customers with a richly-featured product which can answer the vast majority of the feature requirements being presented to us today. It also has been developed to take advantage of the Web and deploy information via the Internet; maximize the use of business intelligence tools; and create a foundation for rapidly developing data warehousing See data warehouse.

Major Features and Benefits

Stored Procedures

UniVerse stored procedures allow complex, server-side procedures to be written with standard programming languages instead of proprietary, procedural extensions to SQL SQL

.

Enterprise Integration

Another feature of UniVerse 9 is an intrinsic, programmatic SQL gateway that can utilize any standard ODBC driver. This enables applications to be integrated with UniVerse no matter where the data resides - in a mainframe, server, desktop, or mobile laptop while still ensuring that the information is accessible.

Easy Systems Administration

A new tool can be used to administer both UNIX and Windows NT UniVerse servers. This feature significantly improves administrative ease-of-use in a networked environment by simplifying the administration of remote UniVerse servers using a Windows-based interface.

Taking Advantage of the Web

As part of the Release 9 version of UniVerse, VMARK has announced UV/Web, a toolkit that provides all the necessary components to build Web applications against a UniVerse RDBMS on UNIX or Windows NT. It enables users to create a new class of Internet and Intranet applications, using UniVerse's functionally rich stored procedures to create dynamic HTML (1) A general term for (HTML pages) Web pages that are customized for each user; for example, returning different values from a search. Contrast with a "static HTML" page, which is the same for all users. See dynamic Web page.  documents.

Bulk Data Loader

New in Release 9 is a standard utility for fast and efficient importation of data from an operating system file to a user-specified format in UniVerse. The UniVerse Bulk Data Loader is highly configurable. It can combine multiple input files into a single table, and multiple columns from different files into a single column. It handles a mixture of fixed or variable length fields specified by arbitrary delimiters and performs data type conversions, plus detects and corrects dirty data (e.g., spaces to NULL).

Transaction Management

UniVerse Release 9 improves transaction management performance for all classes of transactions, and particularly improves performance with long-duration, complex transactions. This enhances UniVerse's industry- leading transaction management capabilities, which is unique among RDBMS's in its support for nested transactions.

A whole new customer base is available to us because we can scale our application to any number of users, move to Windows client/server, build in Internet connections, or add a data warehouse. We're very excited about the options we now have without having to rewrite all of the business logic that took us years to develop."

"Windows NT is a strategic platform for our industry-leading GLOBUS International Banking Package," said John Nugent, Business Development manager at the London, England-based firm. "And the combination of support for UNIX and Windows NT in Release 9 provides us with a unique advantage as we work toward additional alliances with major financial institutions which are moving to NT," he said.

Summary

"With the launch of UniVerse Release 9, we are able to offer a substantially enhanced product to our extensive customer base and worldwide network of partners who embed UniVerse in their business critical solutions. We're giving our partners new opportunities to add value to their packaged solutions, along with the widest possible range of deployment options," Spotts concluded.
