VIRGINIA SECURITIES INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION IS FORMED
 RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Fifteen of Virginia's

largest brokerage firms have joined together to establish the Virginia Securities Industry Association, the first state organization of its kind in the United States. The purpose of the new, nonprofit organization is to identify issues affecting the interests of both the investing public and the securities industry within the Commonwealth and to serve as a vehicle to work with public and private interests to resolve those issues through educational, regulatory, legislative and other initiatives.
The 15 charter member firms include: A.G. Edwards and Sons, Inc.; Advest, Inc.; Alex Brown and Sons Incorporated; Anderson & Strudwick, Inc.; Branch, Cabell and Company; Craigie Incorporated; Davenport and Co. of Virginia, Inc.; Dean Witter Reynolds Inc.; Legg Mason Wood Walker, Incorporated; Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc.; PaineWebber, Inc.; Prudential Securities Incorporated; Scott and Stringfellow Investment Corp.; Shearson Lehman Brothers; and Wheat, First Securities, Inc.
Only registered broker-dealers with offices in Virginia are eligible for membership in the Virginia Securities Industry Association.
The organization has elected the following slate of officers for 1992. Frederick E. Kienel, senior vice president and branch manager of Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. - president; Walter W. Craigie, Jr., managing director of Wheat, First Securities, Inc. vice president; Mason T. New, managing partner and chief executive officer of Branch, Cabell and Company - treasurer; and Henry L. Valentine, II, chairman of the board of Davenport and Co. of Virginia, Inc. - secretary.
"Considering the heightened regulatory climate of today, as well as public concern over developments in the brokerage business, we felt that the time had come for Virginia's securities industry to speak with unity of voice in addressing issues that affect the investing public and the securities industry," said Kienel. "We believe that, given the outstanding caliber of member firms, the Virginia Securities Industry Association will be an effective advocate for the business interests of investors and investment firms throughout our Commonwealth. We hope that through our leadership and initiative we can serve as a model for the development of similar organizations throughout the United States."
