VIRGINIA POWER CUSTOMERS SET THIRD DEMAND RECORD THIS MONTH

RICHMOND, Va., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- For the third time this month, Virginia Power customers have set an all-time peak electricity demand.
Demand by the company's 1.8 million customers reached 13,304 megawatts on Wednesday between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., as temperatures soared to the middle and upper 90s. In some parts of its service area, the temperature reached 101 degrees.
The previous all-time peak of 13,295 megawatts was set on July 9; it surpassed the record of 13,105, set one day earlier. The July 8 peak marked the first time ever that Virginia Power customer demand exceeded 13,000 megawatts. Yesterday was the sixth time this month that demand has surpassed 13,000 megawatts. One megawatt is 1 million watts -- enough power to light 10,000 100-watt light bulbs.
During this period of heavy demand, Virginia Power's generating stations continue to perform well, despite nearly four weeks of unusually hot weather.
The heat has caused Virginia Power customers to use more electricity than usual this month. The company would like to remind its customers that increased electricity consumption will bring higher-than-normal bills for July.
Today's peak demand is projected to be about 13,300 megawatts. (Data on today's peak will not be available until tomorrow afternoon.)
