VIRGINIA POWER CUSTOMERS SET BACK-TO-BACK DEMAND RECORDS

RICHMOND, Va., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Virginia Power customers on Friday set an all-time peak electricity demand, surpassing the record set just one day earlier.
Demand by the company's 1.8 million customers reached 13,295 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. That exceeded Virginia Power's previous all-time peak of 13,105 megawatts, set Thursday. One megawatt is one million watts -- enough power to light 10,000 100-watt light bulbs.
Prior to last Thursday, the company's all-time peak demand was 12,942, set July 14, 1992. In projections made earlier this year, Virginia Power forecast a peak demand of 13,386 megawatts for the summer of 1993.
On Friday, Virginia Power customers set a new 24-hour total summer energy output record of 261,088 megawatt-hours. The previous summer record of 258,968 megawatt-hours was also set Thursday. Total energy output, measured from midnight to midnight, is a measure of the energy consumed by the company's customers during a 24-hour period. The company's all-time 24-hour total energy output record is 273,566 megawatt-hours, set Dec. 22, 1989.
Today's weather forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 90s throughout most of the company's service area, making today the ninth straight day of 90-degree or hotter temperatures and the eighth day of 95-degree or above temperatures.
Today's demand is projected to be about 13,400 megawatts, however, cloudy or rainy conditions in any part of the company's service area could lower demand.
Cooler temperatures are expected toward the end of this week.
