 VIPER USES PROVEN ROCKWELL SUSPENSIONS:
 ENGINEERING, TECHNICAL SUPPORT ARE KEY
TROY, Mich., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International's (NYSE: ROK) wide-ranging and proven capabilities in suspension components and systems, coupled with its long-term relationship with Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C), are paying off in the car maker's hot, new Dodge Viper sports car.
Rockwell International Suspension Systems Company (RISSC), a joint venture of Rockwell International and Mitsubishi Steel Manufacturing Company of Japan, is supplying complete coil spring and shock absorber assemblies for all four corners of the Viper's high performance, four- wheel, independent suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bar/link assemblies.
"Our excellent partnership with Chrysler is a cornerstone of our involvement with the Viper," J. Douglas Lamb, president of RISSC, said.
"Chrysler's strategy relies on capable and dependable suppliers and we believe we meet that description. In addition, because Chrysler brought Viper to fruition by using a small, nimble product team, the team called on those suppliers who could make contributions in engineering and development," he explained.
"Relying on the physical and human resources of our Automotive Technical Center, one of the largest, independent automotive research, development and technical centers in the world, and the Product Development groups at our Milton and Chatham, Ontario, plants, we furnished engineering, key design services, laboratory work and testing, and prototypes." The Technical Center is at Rockwell Automotive's headquarters in Troy.
Rockwell selected special high-strength, micro-alloyed steel for the coil springs to achieve the durability targets. The coil springs are made at Rockwell's Milton, Ontario, plant where finished coil springs are mated with special, high performance shock absorbers made by the Dutch firm Koni.
Complete, ready-to-install assemblies are delivered to the Viper plant in Detroit.
The Viper's stabilizer bar/link assembly is made from a lightweight, hollow, tubular bar with friction welded ends, an innovation which seals the tubular bar, eliminating any possibility of corrosion inside the bar.
The bar also incorporates plastic stop rings which ensure precise location of the bar on the vehicle and resist any subsequent lateral movement. The link assembly functions to enhance the entire stabilizer bar system's efficiency.
The stabilizer bar assembly is made in Chatham, Ontario. Supplying the Dodge Viper adds to the Chatham plant's existing capability of providing high performance suspension systems.
Rockwell International is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in its electronics, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
