Selections will include the ``Christmas Cantata'' by Daniel Pinkham Daniel Rogers Pinkham, Jr. (born June 5, 1923 in Lynn, Massachusetts, died December 18, 2006 in Natick, Massachusetts) was an American composer, organist, and harpsichordist. Pinkham was one of America's most active composers during his lifetime. and a variety of ethnic holiday music. The AVSOMC will join the Antelope Valley College theater and dance departments Feb. 23 and 24 for a multifaceted production titled ``The Dragon Wakes.'' The production is a tribute to modern China. ``Although this presentation is a theatrical performance, the amount of music to be performed by the AVSOMC will be equal to that of a concert,'' Newby said. The theatrical portion of the program will be staged and directed by Mark Branner. The program will involve about 120 musicians, actors and singers, as well as acrobatic sequences featuring Chinese guest artist and acrobat Zheng Yin Ping. Now a traditional part of the AVSOMC's concert season, the annual performance featuring student winners of the AVSOMC Bach Competition and Gail Newby Concerto Competition will highlight the March 24 program. ``In its fourth year, the youth competition attracts some of the Southland's most promising and viable young talent,'' said Newby. The March 24 program will begin at 7 p.m. with a recital by winners of the Bach Competition, followed by the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale's performance of Beethoven's ``Overture in C Major, Nameday.'' Selections by winners of the concerto competition and the orchestra's performance of Johannes Brahms' ``Symphony No. 3 in F Major'' will complete the evening. The season finale will be May 19, when the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Mormon Choir joins the symphony and Master Chorale for ``Peace and Praise,'' a performance of 20th century masterworks. Sponsored by Antelope Valley College and private donations, the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale performs a five-concert season and makes additional community appearances. The group is under the direction of Newby, a professor of music at Antelope Valley College. In addition to its regular season, the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale has scheduled youth concerts at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Feb. 23 for students in grades four through 12.
