VIOLINIST FINDS ARTISTIC FREEDOM AND SUCCESS SINCE COMING TO U.S.

The Armenian-born Russian musician emigrated from Moscow in 1989 with his wife, Ruzanna, and son Arman. Shortly after arriving in this country, his daughter Annie was born.

``Artistically, I had a big career in the Soviet Union,'' Tigranyan said. ``I felt strong to go forward,'' Tigranyan said.

The determined musician immediately set out to find performance opportunities in his new home. With Arman, also his main protege, in tow, borrowed instruments in hand and the spirit of newfound freedom in his heart, Tigranyan played for conductors, classical music aficionados and a rapidly expanding support network.

``Do you know what we have here? This is like a diamond!'' pianist Jane Hesselgesser recalled of her grateful response when presented with Tigranyan's resume. As president of the Sunday Afternoon Musicale mu·si·cale

She immediately recognized a remarkable talent and quickly arranged to meet the musician in person.

When Hesselgesser opened her door that August afternoon in 1991, she found Ashot and Arman Tigranyan in full concert attire. The three musicians spent the day playing Bach and learning to bridge language gaps over tea.

Shortly thereafter, Hesselgesser and Tigranyan established Classical Concerts Management - the basis for their subsequent performing partnership. The duo also has been represented by Columbia Artists Management's Community Concerts Division since 1992.

``Each personality realizes what he or she is in this country,'' Tigranyan said of the revelatory growth he gains from his artistic freedom. ``You start to realize your quality - not only as a human being, but as a specialist, too.''

Last year, Tigranyan also reached another milestone: He became a United States citizen.

Becoming a specialist is important to Arman Tigranyan. The 18-year-old violinist has studied with his father since age 3. One day, he hopes to be added to the long list of virtuosos who have inspired him and his father.

``My biggest challenge is to learn to play,'' said the young musician. Exhibiting maturity and understanding well beyond that of most teen-agers, he added, ``Making real music is more important than showing off technique. When I was young, I could go play something and impress people because I was young. But good playing is not just fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Before coming to this country, Arman attended the special music school for gifted students at the Moscow Conservatory. Since arriving here, he has performed with the Orange County Symphony Orchestra and as soloist with the Santa Barbara Symphony.
