in 50 Cent's "In Da Club," you haven't heard of Miri Ben-Ari Miri Ben-Ari (born in 1978) is an Israeli Grammy Award-winning classically trained violinist known primarily for her work on several hip-hop projects. She was discovered by former Fugees member Wyclef Jean. . She's made a name for herself as the "Hip Hop Violinist," bringing an element of contemporary classical flair to the Top 40 sound. Seems suspect, but surprisingly, it works. We caught up with Ben-Ari via e-mail from her native Israel, in advance of her appearance Saturday at the Hot Import Nights “HIN” redirects here. For other uses, see HIN (disambiguation).
Hot Import Nights (HIN) is an auto show comprised of mainly tuner import cars. The show originated in California, but now tours various cities in the United States.
traveling automobile and pop-culture festival at the Los Angeles Convention Center The Los Angeles Convention Center (abbreviated LACC) is a convention center in downtown Los Angeles. The LACC hosts annual events such as the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, and was best known to video games fans as host to E3 until its cessation in 2006. .

How did you get involved with performing for Hot Import Nights -- and the event in L.A., for that matter? Was it your choice as to what city to perform in?

We have been talking for a while, and the schedules just worked out. HIN always features the hottest, most unique artists, andI'm proud to be the first instrumentalartist, and definitely the first hip-hop violinist, to perform at the HIN show.

Is there anything about HIN -- the cars, the DJs, the other musicians -- that you're looking forward to?

I heartherewill bemore than $30 million worth of modified cars on display, which is pretty amazing! As far asthe other performances, I love Eve. She is a friend that supported me from the very beginning of my career.

Is your performance at HIN going to be any different from your other live shows? What, exactly, is an average Miri show like?

I'm the first instrumentalist to become an Apollo Legend (after appearing on "Showtime at the Apollo"). I've performed for every type of audience: old, young and from different countries. My violin is not limited to one language. It crosses over by playing the universal language of instrumental music. I "grew up on stage" and love performing in front of live audiences.

According to your Web site biography, your roots are in jazz. Do you miss that genre -- and do you plan to return to it?

I grew up in Israel playing classical music and came to America (New York New York, state, United States

) to study jazz. I use all of those influences to create my own original style.

You mention that your next album will promote "live music and live instruments" as much as possible. Could you explain what that means?

My current video, "Symphony of Brotherhood" (available on iTunes) features Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and me playing the violin The violin player usually holds the instrument under the chin, supported by the left shoulder (see below for variations of this posture). The strings are sounded either by drawing the bow across them (arco), or sometimes by plucking them (pizzicato). . I'm really proud of the track, which hit No. 2 on Billboard and is now playing on VH1 and MTV MTV

. It gives me the opportunity to promote live music and live instruments while leading by example. Next month I will perform live at VH1's "Save the Music" concert. I will also be supporting the organization by going to schools and talking to kids about music education.

Any tentative dates for albums, special shows, soundtrack appearances, etc.?

My next album is due early next year. Next month is very busy for me: I will be at Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall
