VALENCIA - Nancy Uscher, a University of New Mexico The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a public university in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was founded in 1889. Uscher, who will begin her new position at CalArts in Valencia on June 15, is an associate provost for academic affairs at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

``Nancy Uscher brings an outstanding set of qualifications, experiences, and accomplishments to her role as provost,'' CalArts President Stephen Lavine said in printed remarks. ``Nancy has lived the life for which we are preparing our students: living as a working artist, inventing her own unique course as she has moved forward.''

As provost, Uscher will be CalArts' chief academic officer and also teach at the institute's School of Music.

She received her doctorate in music from New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the  in 1980. Uscher spent six years as the co-principal violist of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra of the Israel Broadcasting Authority (Hebrew: התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים, רשות . She also has performed with the Brandenberg Ensemble, the American Composers Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra.

She became a professor of music at the University of New Mexico in 1992. She has held various administrative posts, including chairing the Music Department and serving as director of the University's Center for the Arts in Society, associate dean and then dean of University College.

In addition to teaching music, Uscher is on the faculty of the University of New Mexico's Women Studies Program, where she developed courses and taught on women's expression of identity in the arts and literature.

In faculty- and student-exchange programs, she has performed and taught in Mexico, Brazil and Vietnam. Uscher also served as a consultant to a group of African artists creating a new college of the arts in Harare, Zimbabwe.
