VIEWLOGIC ANNOUNCES WINDOWS NT-BASED ELECTRONIC DESIGN TOOLS

MARLBORO, Mass., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Viewlogic Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIEW) today announced at its annual shareholders' meeting plans to deliver in the fourth quarter of 1993, a high-performance electronic design automation (EDA) solution called Workview PLUS for Windows NT running on Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows NT operating system. Viewlogic becomes the first full-line EDA vendor to provide end-users and third-party tool, library developers, and industry standards organizations with a detailed development and delivery schedule for products compatible with the much-anticipated 32-bit Windows NT operating environment.
Viewlogic, which has already begun porting its software to Windows NT, will demonstrate the initial results of its work at the Design Automation Conference in Dallas next month. An early release of Workview PLUS for Windows NT including design entry, simulation and synthesis tools, will be available to third-party developers in the third quarter of 1993 to facilitate their testing and integration of Windows NT. Initial deliveries will support Intel- and Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) Alpha AXP-based Windows NT platforms.
Windows NT will run on many microprocessor architectures. In particular, it is expected to elevate the performance of Intel-based personal computers to levels more typically associated with UNIX-based engineering workstations.
"Viewlogic's philosophy of providing users with complete freedom of choice in design automation extends to the computing platform they select," said Alain Hanover, Viewlogic's president and CEO. "As the only full-line EDA vendor delivering rich multi-platform solutions, it should come as no surprise that Viewlogic is the first to put a stake in the ground regarding Windows NT. And, it's another notch in our belt of providing support for important, established and emerging industry standards. Standards go beyond UNIX, and Viewlogic will ensure that N() is recognized by industry standards groups like the CAD Framework Initiative."
"Powerful applications such as Viewlogic's Workview PLUS for Windows NT will quickly demonstrate the value of Windows NT in technical environments," said Jon Lazarus, Microsoft vice president, Systems Strategy. "Viewlogic is enabling the PC to serve as a platform for increasingly complex electronic design."
Frank C. McCabe, Digital Equipment Corporation's vice president, Discrete Manufacturing and Defense, stated, "We are excited that Viewlogic will port Workview PLUS for Windows NT to the Alpha AXP platform and thus become the first EDA vendor to announce support for Windows NT on Alpha AXP. Combining Workview PLUS for Windows NT with Alpha AXP will result in leadership price/performance for electronics engineers."

NT Delivers Performance, Flexibility
Workview PLUS for Windows NT will provide electronic designers:
-- 32-bit performance for faster simulation and support for synthesis, test, and other power-hungry applications.
-- pre-emptive multitasking or the ability to run multiple jobs concurrently -- for example to do plotting while running simulation -- to boost overall design productivity.
-- portability and scalability, which gives users the flexibility to run their applications on different hardware architectures and platforms, from notebook to mainframe-class computers.
-- symmetric multiprocessing for better hardware performance and improved applications performance.
-- compatibility with existing DOS and Windows applications, so users can preserve their investments in tools and designs, and minimize disruptions when upgrading their hardware environment.
Workview PLUS for Windows NT will include modules for design entry, simulation, synthesis and test of FPGAs, ASICs, ICs, and PCBs. In addition, Workview PLUS for Windows NT will include a framework that incorporates many of the standards specified by the CAD Framework Initiative (CFI).
Workview PLUS for Windows NT will run on Intel and Digital Equipment Corporation Alpha AXP-based computing platforms equipped with Microsoft's Windows NT. Pricing for packaged electronic design solutions will range from $8,000 to $50,000.
