VIDEOTELECONFERENCE ENABLES HOME-BOUND SUPERINTENDENT TO PARTICIPATE
 IN BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- When it looked as if recent back surgery would prevent superintendent Dr. Ron Saunders from participating in a monthly meeting of the Huntsville Board of Education, South Central Bell came up with a high-tech way to bring the two parties together via a live, two-way videoteleconference.
The call will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, from the Annie C. Merts Center, 200 White Street, Huntsville.
The videoteleconference is being done as a demonstration of South Central Bell's Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) technology. Using three ISDN lines, video equipment and a personal computer, video and voice will be transmitted between Saunders' home and the Merts Center.
"This practical application of ISDN will enable the board and Dr. Saunders to meet as if they're in the same room," said Gary Pledger, South Central Bell's district manager. "Videoteleconferencing is widely used in specially fitted conference centers by large companies throughout the world. But through our advanced digital network and ISDN we're able to bring this capability to a desktop, or home -- right here in Huntsville -- and meet the needs of customers such as Huntsville City Schools."
Unlike traditional telephone service, ISDN makes possible the provision of many different kinds of services -- voice, data, video, facsimile -- simultaneously over a single digital transmisison line. ISDN provides not one, but three information-bearing channels in a single line. That makes it possible for users to enjoy multiple voice channels, or a combination of voice, data and video communications, on that one line.
An ISDN Basic Rate Interface line provides two 64 kilobit-per-second B channels and one 16 kbps D channel. Most modems in use today transmit data about 30 times slower than a single ISDN line.
South Central Bell announced last year that Huntsville is the first major metropolitan area served by the company to have a totally digital public switched network.
"Now we're seeing the real-life customer benefits of our million-dollar-a-month investment in technology for Huntsville over the past few years," Pledger said. "We're sending more than voice and data signals, we're sending a signal to the world that we're ready to meet any telecommunications need of existing businesses or any looking for a great place to locate."
South Central Bell is a subsidiary of BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc., with headquarters in Atlanta and Birmingham. The company provides unified direction and support for the local telecommunications operations of BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) in the southeastern United States under the trade names of South Central Bell and Southern Bell. These companies serve over 17.5 million local telephone lines and provide local exchange and intraLATA long distance service over one of the most modern telecommunications networks in the world.
