VIDEOCART SIGNS THREE-YEAR PACT WITH MCI

CHICAGO, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today that VideOcart Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: VCRTC), developer of shopping cart video display screens used for advertising and marketing in grocery stores, has chosen MCI to provide voice and data services under a three- year, multi-million dollar agreement.
VideOcart will use a custom-designed Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) data network to link hundreds -- eventually thousands -- of grocery stores across the United States to its host computers in Chicago. The MCI IP data network also provides VideOcart with greater cost-efficiency and enhanced reliability through a diverse system of access routes.
According to Jim Faletti, VideOcart senior vice president, Technical Services, "This high availability, interactive, wide area network allows us to communicate with the tens of thousands of our units across the country in real time in a cost effective way. We are able to constantly update our promotional and advertising messages, retrieve data from the carts, and do electronic couponing instantaneously over the network. The ability to scale up our business on a national basis would not be possible without the capabilities MCI provides with their network technology."
In addition to the data network, VideOcart will use MCI Vision and MCI Vision 800 Service. MCI Vision is an outbound service designed for businesses with features and capabilities that traditionally are available only to the largest national companies, such as management and control, customization, invoice consolidation, multiple access options and volume discounts.
"VideOcart has demonstrated technical vision in its innovative, entrepreneurial deployment of TCP/IP data network technology. We look forward to providing them with the telecommunications support they need for their unique business application," said Timothy F. Price, president of MCI Business Services.
VideOcart is a micro-marketing company which installs and maintains a communication network consisting of programmable and targetable digital communications to video displays affixed to grocery shopping carts. This communications network, now installed in supermarkets across the country, allows consumer product goods manufacturers to reach consumers at the exact aisle location of the brand being advertised or promoted with a flexible video message.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 international offices.
