VIDEO GAME\Increased thrill factor.

Byline: Roy Bassave Knight-Ridder Tribune News Wire

Category: Action/strategy.

Players: One to two.

Recommended ages: 17 and older (animated violence).

How the game works: The plot is simple: You must demolish, devastate dev·as·tate

1. To lay waste; destroy.

2. To overwhelm; confound; stun: was devastated by the rude remark.
and destroy everything belonging to the enemy, from towers to trucks. To complete each of 106 missions, you must capture the enemy's flag and return to your bunker. That's easier said than done, though. First you must learn how to control your four vehicles (helicopter, tank, armored support vehicle and Jeep). Then you search for the tower with the enemy's flag. Sometimes the flag is hidden inside; blow up buildings even if they look empty (there could be soldiers hiding inside). In a two-player match, the screen is split and the game becomes much harder.

Good points, bad points: Return Fire: Maps O' Death, the 3DO sequel to Return Fire, gives you 100 more missions but requires that you have the original version to play. In the new "Return Fire" versions for PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows 95 CD-ROM, you get the original version plus the 100 new missions all on one CD-ROM.

Plus, in the new versions and the sequel, you still see blood and hear yells when the tiny villains die, but if you're good, you can avoid killing them and still accomplish your mission.

Graphics are top-notch, featuring detailed landscape and buildings, but the soldiers are too small. The battlefield perspective changes with distance.

The soundtrack provides classical music standards for each of your vehicles: If you choose the helicopter, for instance, you'll hear Wagner reminiscent of the helicopter raid scene in "Apocalypse Now." Listen to genuine digital sound effects sound effects
