VIDEO CODEC CARD AND FULL MOTION CAMERA BREAK PRICE/PERFORMANCE BARRIER FOR COLOR DESKTOP VIDEOCONFERENCING

/ADVANCE/IRVINE, Calif., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Workstation Technologies Inc. (WTI), a leading developer of digital video technology, today expanded the boundaries of desktop multimedia with the introduction of a color camera and the first CCITT-compliant video codec card that facilitates communication between IBM PC and Macintosh platforms.
"These new products are a major step toward high-end, low-cost desktop-based video communication for mainstream business applications," said Ash Jain, WTI's executive vice president. "The camera and codec board provide the same powerful video processing technology that has only been available previously with expensive hardware."
WTI's video codec cards compress and digitize video pictures for transmission over digital circuits. The coding and decoding capabilities convert analog to digital signals and back again at the receiving end, significantly reducing transmission bandwidth.
Until recently, this technology required separate stations for videoconferencing and individual digitizing and compression boards. Additionally, because each vendor utilized proprietary compression algorithms, different videoconferencing systems could not communicate with one another.
The WTI codec card combines customized chips with an industry- standard video compression algorithm, moving the industry closer to low- cost, universal multimedia and videoconferencing systems.
WTI is also introducing a color camera that supports a wide range of multimedia applications including QuickTime movies, Video for Windows, video mail and desktop presentations. The camera's slimline housing allows the camera to sit on top of the computer monitor or mount on a standard tripod.
"We think the camera will become an essential input device, adding visual communications to our everyday computing activities," Jain said.
Optimized to perform under varying light conditions, the camera also provides a high signal-to-noise ratio, resulting in a high-resolution image. The auto-focus lens has a depth of field from one foot to infinity, relieving the user from having to actively focus the camera.
The codec card piggybacks onto WTI's video communications base card, which plugs into the desktop computer. OEM pricing for the codec/base card combination ranges from $1,250 to $1,750, and $210 to $270 for the camera, depending on quantity and custom options.
Founded in 1989, WTI is a leader in the design of video and audio digitizing technology. From concept through integration and production, WTI develops board-level multimedia and videoconferencing solutions for PC and Macintosh platforms.
