A five-acre plot earmarked for commercial development instead will be kept as a trailhead for hikers, a migration route for animals and open parkland near city life, officials said Wednesday.

``It's a significant piece of property for several reasons. No. 1, it is a migratory route for animals that go from Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and the Santa Susana Mountains The Santa Susana Mountains are a transverse range of mountains in southern California, north of the city of Los Angeles, in the United States. The parcel north of the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County.  at the Liberty Canyon Road interchange had been offered for development for 25 years. The parcel had been zoned for commercial development and had been considered over the years for various projects.

Officials said Wednesday the land was bought by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  with revenue generated by Proposition A, the property tax assessment for parks that was approved by Los Angeles County voters in 1996.

``This is the last little piece of the wildlife corridor north of the 101 freeway, into the Simi Hills and Las Padres National Forest,'' said Joe Edmiston, executive director of the conservancy. ``This was a major piece - especially because it was commercially zoned property. . . . We're very pleased.''

Conservancy officials said the land provides a wildlife corridor so mountain lions, bobcats, American badgers, gray foxes, mule deer mule deer

and long-tailed weasels can thrive in the Santa Monica Mountains.

They said animals can cross under the freeway at Liberty Canyon Road to access hills on either side.

In addition, supporters said the property creates a view of open space for travelers along the Ventura Freeway.

``Now they have a nice view of the Santa Monica Mountains instead of the sign,'' said Edmiston.
