VICTIMS IDENTIFIED IN PAIR OF WEEKEND AUTO CRASHES.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

PEARBLOSSOM - Victims of head-on crashes on two Antelope Valley highways were identified Monday as men from Palmdale and Littlerock.

Randall Macres, 40, of Palmdale was killed about 6:15 a.m. Saturday when his Toyota Camry slammed head-on into a big rig on Highway 138 just east of Pearblossom, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Donald Wayne Hoofman, 45, of Littlerock died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday when the car in which he was a passenger hit a pickup truck on Sierra Highway north of Rosamond, Kern County officials said.

Macres had been driving from his mother's home in Riverside early Saturday when his car drifted across Highway 138's center line east of 133rd Street East, CHP officers said. The driver of a gravel truck heading the other way at 45 or 50 mph braked but couldn't avoid hitting the car.

Macres was thrown from the car as it spun around after the impact.

Macres' car left no skid marks, so officials don't know whether he might have fallen asleep. A pipe for smoking methamphetamine was found in the car, but there was no sign that Macres was intoxicated, officials said.

Truck driver Otis Malin Jr., 70, of Palmdale hurt his shin but was otherwise uninjured, officials said.

The Sierra Highway crash that killed Hoofman also injured Joseph Gennuso, 26, of Rosamond and Jennifer Jones, 30, of Rosamond. Gennuso, who was driving the 1993 Ford in which Hoofman was riding, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving but not booked into jail because he was hospitalized.
