VICA LAUDS VALLEY LEADERS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS.

Byline: Daily News

UNIVERSAL CITY - Long hours of usually thankless work won praise Thursday night as the Valley Industry and Commerce Association turned the spotlight on local business leaders for their efforts on behalf of the community.

The annual Excellence in Business Advocacy Awards gala, a black-tie affair held at the Sheraton Universal grand ballroom, served as a night to praise enterprises of all sorts for their contribution on local commercial and community issues.

Awards were given in various categories to the Daily News, Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

Robert L. Rodine, a financial-planning consultant and principal of the Sherman Oaks-based Polaris Group, took home the award as outstanding volunteer advocate. ``It's extraordinarily remote that I might win, especially because I haven't won several times in the past,'' he said. ``It's very satisfying being in the company of those people. They're prominent stars, and I don't even hope to reach those kinds of heights.''

The Child Care Resource Center won in the nonprofit-organization category, while West Coast Environmental and Engineering claimed the prize for small business.

The Daily News won the achievement award in the large-business category.

``Obviously, it's an honor and privilege to be recognized by VICA, such a driver of the issues,'' said Tracy Rafter, the newspaper's publisher and chief executive officer. ``We're a large business in the Valley, so of course we support VICA members in many of their community initiatives.''

Habitat for Humanity won recognition as the outstanding new VICA company, while the Robert E. Gibson Corporate Award for Excellence, named for the late president of Valley Federal Savings & Loan, went to Bob Hope Airport.
