VIATEL ANNOUNCES EQUITY INVESTMENT BY GEORGE SOROS; P.C. CHATTERJEE, A SOROS ASSOCIATE, JOINS VIATEL BOARD

NEW YORK, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Varsavsky, chairman and CEO of Viatel, announced today that an investment partnership including George Soros has made a significant equity investment for a minority position in the company. P.C. Chatterjee, Mr. Soros' partner, has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the company.
Viatel is a leading provider of enhanced long distance telecommunications services to businesses located outside the United States. Its services include the Viatel Card, a worldwide calling card usable in most countries to call anywhere in the world, and Private Networks, worldwide networks that link frequently dialed international call destinations. As a so-called "light carrier," Viatel focuses on developing software using existing international telephone networks to provide innovative services which are marketed through the company's local marketing representatives worldwide. Among other enhancements, Viatel offers voice mail, facsimile mail and multi-currency billing.
Mr. Varsavsky said, "This investment is a strong endorsement of Viatel's strategy to offer high quality, attractively priced, cutting edge telecommunications services in countries throughout the world where those services are either unavailable or expensive." A spokesman for the Soros group stated that his group feels the potential for such services is enormous, and that Viatel has the personnel, technology and marketing strengths to achieve significant market penetration in a wide variety of international markets.
Viatel has recently reinforced its management team through several significant hires. David Hershberg, former vice chairman of Shearson Lehman Brothers, joined the company as a board member and as executive vice president responsible for financial and legal affairs. New additions to the operating unit include Fred Hughes, formerly with Millicom, as general manager of telephony, and Frank Klushmire, formerly responsible for FDR's cable operation, as general manager of operations.
At the end of September, the company, which in three years has grown to be the seventh largest U.S.-based international telephone company based on revenues, had monthly sales of $2.1 million from more than 9,000 customers.
