, used for the treatment of patients who require greater than 80% oxygen.

Brief treatment with high oxygen concentrations greater than 80% has been recently reported to have important benefits for patients undergoing surgical procedures Surgical procedures have long and possibly daunting names. The meaning of many surgical procedure names can often be understood if the name is broken into parts. For example in splenectomy, "ectomy" is a suffix meaning the removal of a part of the body. "Splene-" means spleen. . A recent National Institute of Health sponsored trial of patients requiring colon-rectal surgery reported that patients given 80% oxygen during their operation and for two hours postoperative, had a 50% reduction in postoperative infections.

A second study reported a 43% reduction in postoperative nausea and vomiting Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is an unpleasant complication affecting about a third of the 10% of the population undergoing general anaesthesia each year. This equates to about two million people in the United Kingdom annually.  in patients who received greater than 80% oxygen as compared with patients who only received the typically delivered 30% oxygen. There are more than 30 million surgical procedures performed annually in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

have been reported in randomized controlled trials of transporting minor trauma victims who are elderly, and in transporting pregnant women.

The Hi-Ox80, developed from a patent-pending design, is a new technology in oxygen masks and is the only commercially available disposable oxygen mask capable of delivering greater than 80% oxygen at only 8 liters per minute of oxygen flow.

The ability to deliver high concentrations of oxygen at one-half to one-third the flow requirements of other devices also has positive implications for hospitals and field applications where oxygen resources are limited by the number of tanks available, or the flow requirements.

"Besides the postoperative surgical benefits of the Hi-Ox80, we have been impressed with its ability to have an important humanitarian impact for patients receiving oxygen at home, who require so much oxygen flow that they are unable to leave their homes," stated Alex Stenzler, vice president of advanced technologies for VIASYS Healthcare's Respiratory Technologies Group.

Stenzler added that, "A young adult patient recently given a Hi-Ox80 because of oxygen requirements of 20-30 liters per minute to maintain safe oxygen blood levels, was able to leave his home and go to church for the first time in four months on only 6 liters of oxygen per minute."
