VIASOFT and PKS Information Services enter strategic alliance; new relationship provides end users with unprecedented flexibility to choose any combination of insourcing and outsourcing services.
The service licensing agreement authorizes PKS to provide technology and professional services for maintaining existing legacy systems, enabling customers to employ VIASOFT technology and services to manage their applications in-house or outsource them to PKS.
PKS Information Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc., a diversified $3 billion company. PKS provides its services coast to coast to customers representing virtually every industry.
In addition to running one of the most sophisticated computer supercenters in the country, PKS operates an extensive telecommunications network to enhance end-user connectivity by offering customers a number of voice and data services. The company's system-integration practice defines, develops and implements cost-effective mainframe and client/server information systems.
``We feel that VIASOFT offers the most comprehensive solution and best technology available in the applications maintenance and development market,'' said Raul Pupo president and chief executive officer of PKS.
``This agreement enables our integration specialists to provide significant added value to our existing and potential customers. Not only will we be able to deliver the most cost-effective year 2000 conversion solutions, but our customers' information technology and planning decisions will be considerably enhanced by the product.''
``We wanted to partner with a supplier in whom we could place our trust to provide the highest level of customer service and support,'' said Steven D. Whiteman, president and CEO of VIASOFT.
``PKS is known throughout the industry for their clear commitment to excellence and customer service. This agreement helps leverage our existing solution offerings into new markets. More importantly, however, it provides users with the freedom to choose the degree to which they want to outsource their applications or keep them in-house. And regardless of whom they choose, their solutions will all have the same look and feel.''
The significance of the alliance is in the choices it creates for customers of VIASOFT and PKS. ``The worth of great customer service requires a focus not on transaction costs but on the relationship value,'' said Dr. Chip Bell, author of the current best-selling business book ``Customers as Partners.''
``This alliance between two of the industry's leading-edge service providers is the prototype for partnerships of the future. VIASOFT and PKS customers will be the benefactors of the synergistic success this shared vision represents.''
The relationship is also at the forefront of current outsourcing trends. ``Corporations are increasingly looking outside of their boundaries to obtain `best-in-class' services through outsourcing,'' said Ian Hayes, principal of Clarity Consulting, an information technology management consulting firm specializing in application- management issues.
``These services are becoming increasingly important for projects, such as year 2000 conversions, which require large commitments of people and system resources over and above those needed for standard operations. Outsourcing provides a method of obtaining those resources without sacrificing the quality of critical application support.
``The combination of VIASOFT and PKS creates a `best-in-class' service by combining high-quality tools, services and system resources into a complete package for companies seeking an outsourcing solution.''
VIASOFT solutions include VIASOFT's Insourcing and VIASOFT's Enterprise 2000, and are based on the company's Existing Systems Workbench (ESW) technology, an integrated suite of software tools that provides in-depth application understanding and addresses each phase of the existing systems maintenance and redevelopment life cycle.
VIASOFT's Insourcing is a strategic solution that combines VIASOFT technology with on-site professional services to enable customers to successfully implement enhanced, repeatable processes to maintain and redevelop existing systems. VIASOFT's Enterprise 2000 is a combination of professional services and technology that is designed to help customers address the year 2000 century data- conversion requirements for existing systems.
