SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1997--VIA Medical Corp. Monday announced that it has entered into an agreement with Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

RODA is being developed as a minimally invasive device to provide online monitoring of the cardiovascular and oxygenation oxygenation /ox·y·gen·a·tion/ (ok?si-je-na´shun)

status of surgical patients. The information obtained from RODA is expected to assist physicians in making decisions regarding potential interventions such as blood transfusions and drug therapies.

RODA combines VIA's Blood Gas and Chemistry Monitor, a device that measures blood gas and chemistry parameter ex-vivo, with Alliance's software technology, OxyFlow.

The Blood Gas and Chemistry Monitor is being exhibited today at the 1997 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an association of physicians (primarily anesthesiologists) whose stated goal is to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient.  in San Diego. Representatives from both companies will be available at the meeting to discuss the development of RODA.

The development of RODA demonstrates a potential new use of VIA's automation and electrode technologies. VIA's partnership with Alliance, a public company with extensive knowledge and experience regarding tissue oxygenation, supports VIA's blood analysis expertise.

"We look forward to this collaboration with Alliance Pharmaceutical in bringing to market an advanced monitoring system that complements both companies' focus on the critically ill patient in surgery and the ICU/CCU setting," said Randall Whitfield, president and chief executive officer of VIA.

"RODA could be the first minimally invasive device to obtain online cardiovascular and oxygen status of patients," said Duane Roth, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "The development of RODA will benefit from VIA's experience with the design and manufacturing of its blood monitor."

VIA is a medical device company that has made a fundamental advance in the field of critical care medicine; a patient-attached monitor for automated measurement of blood chemistries.

Alliance is a pharmaceutical research and development company focusing on transforming novel scientific discoveries into innovative drug products.

Alliance has three products in clinical development: Oxygent (perflubron emulsion), a temporary oxygen carrier for surgical and other patients; LiquiVent, an intrapulmonary agent to reduce a patient's exposure to the harmful effects of conventional mechanical ventilation; and Imagent US, an intravenous contrast agent for enhancement of ultrasound images. These products are being co-developed with Johnson & Johnson, Hoechst Marion Roussel and Schering AG, Germany, respectively.
