For Lee, ``Brokeback'' marked his third DGA nomination overall. He won the award in 2001 for ``Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' and was also nominated in 1996 for ``Sense and Sensibility Sense and Sensibility is a novel by the English novelist Jane Austen, that was first published in 1811. It was the first of Austen's novels to be published, under the pseudonym "A Lady". .''

Spielberg's nod for ``Munich'' marked his ninth DGA nomination, dating back to ``Jaws'' in 1976, in addition to his receiving the DGA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

Along the way, he won the best director honor for ``Saving Private Ryan'' in 1999, ``Schindler's List'' in 1994 and ``The Color Purple'' in 1986, with nominations for ``Amistad,'' ``Empire of the Sun,'' ``E.T. the Extra Terrestrial'' and ``Close Encounters of the Third Kind.''

Spielberg has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for ``Munich,'' but the movie was snubbed Wednesday by both the Writers Guild of America The Writers Guild of America is a term often referring to the joint efforts of the Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America, west. ``Good Night'' has been a real tour de force for actor-turned-director Clooney, who co-wrote the screenplay and portrays former CBS news executive Fred Friendly to David Strathairn's Edward R. ``Capote'' director Miller received the DGA nod for what is his first nondocumentary feature film. His previous directorial credit was the 1998 documentary ``The Cruise.''

``Crash'' director Haggis earned his first DGA feature film nod. Haggis, who also wrote and produced the film, has been a successful screenwriter (``Million Dollar Baby''), but his directorial efforts had been mostly in television shows, including ``thirtysomething.''
