VETERANS REMEMBER LOYALTY DAY.

Byline: DENNIS McCARTHY Dennis McCarthy may refer to:

  • Dennis McCarthy (congressman), (19th century) Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1885

Bert Dorosy and his buddies arrived at the Chatsworth Train Station early Saturday to set up folding chairs, start the coffee brewing and get things ready for the 10 a.m. program.

The old vets from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11508 never know how many chairs they're going to need because they never know how many people are going to show up. Could be 15, could be 50.

Public Law 529 - creating what is known as Loyalty Day and adopted by Congress in 1958 - started out with a bang in this country to counter communism rallies on May Day. But hardly anyone remembers it anymore except these old vets.

If it wasn't for Bert, Rocky Robinson, Al Reiter, Neil Baliber and the rest of the guys and their wives over at the Chatsworth/Woodland Hills VFW See Video for Windows.  Post, there would be no organized public Loyalty Day celebration in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Means being loyal. Sure, we've got Memorial Day and Veterans Day to remember and honor the men and women who fought and died for this country. And the Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution.  to celebrate Independence Day.

We've even got a Flag Day in June to celebrate the red, white and blue. But we seem to have forgotten all about Public Law 529.

Congress envisioned Loyalty Day as a day when "patriotic citizens held parades, flag ceremonies, public meetings, school programs and other American activities throughout the nation."

But there were no big parades, flag ceremonies, public meetings or school programs Saturday to honor Loyalty Day.

It was just Bert and his buddies setting up a few rows of folding chairs at a train station. Trying to keep Loyalty Day alive locally for another year. Looking out for their country.

They're more than happy to do it, the men say. They just don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Standing on a makeshift stage lined with American flags, the men looked out into the train station parking lot at 9:30 a.m. and smiled.

"Bert," Rocky said, "it looks like we might need more chairs."

Dozens of mainly older veterans, both men and women, from service posts throughout the Valley brought their spouses, kids and grandkids with them to learn about Loyalty Day.

Local firefighters pulled up in their rigs, while a half-dozen kids from St. John Eudes School in Chatsworth took their seats, including 13-year-old Alejandra Rivera and her mom Margarita Margarita (märgärē`tä), island, 444 sq mi (1,150 sq km), in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela. In a few minutes, Alejandra would stand behind a microphone to read her award-winning essay, "Who Are Today's Patriots?"

"My daughter worked so hard on that essay and learned so much," Margarita said, watching Alejandra walk on stage.

"We both learned so much about patriotism and how the loyalty and courage these men here today showed made it possible for all of us today to speak out freely in this country."

Patriotism is pretty easy to understand in America, Alejandra began, quoting Coolidge.

All you have to do is look out for your country while you're looking out for yourself.

By noon, the train station was empty, except for a few people waiting for the Metroliner.

Bert and his VFW buddies had put away more than 60 folding chairs before shaking hands and heading home.

No doubt about it, they agreed. It had been one of their most successful Loyalty Day programs in many years.
