VETERANS NHL EXECUTIVES NAMED GM, ASSISTANT GM FOR THE MIGHTY DUCKS OF ANAHEIM

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran National Hockey League executives Jack Ferreira and Pierre Gauthier have been named general manager and assistant general manager, respectively, of The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, in a joint announcement made today by Tony Tavares, president of Disney Sports Enterprises Inc. and Jack Lindquist, chairman of The Mighty Ducks.
Ferreira comes to The Mighty Ducks from the Montreal Canadiens, where he was director of pro scouting, while Gauthier joins the team from the Quebec Nordiques, where he has also served as scouting director.
"We are thrilled to have been able to obtain the services of two such highly qualified men at one time, filling two vitally important positions for The Mighty Ducks," said Tavares. "With their incredible knowledge of hockey talent at both the professional and amateur level, we are extremely confident that Jack and Pierre will help us obtain the very best talent available."
Said Michael Eisner, chairman of The Walt Disney Co., "As in all of our enterprises, the element we are most interested in is talent. These two men have a history and expertise of identifying talent, one in the professional leagues, the other in European and Canadian junior hockey, as well as U.S. collegiate hockey."
Ferreira has spent the current season scouting talent in the NHL, the IHL and AHL. Previously he played a major role in the start-up of the San Jose Sharks, serving as the team's general manager during its first season. His other NHL experience includes stints as vice president/general manager for the Minnesota North Stars, director of player development for the New York Rangers and U.S. and college scout for the Calgary Flames.
Gauthier has been a Nordiques scout for 12 years and served as scouting director for the past five years. He is respected throughout the NHL as one of the most astute judges of amateur hockey talent and his breadth of knowledge extends throughout North America and Eastern Europe.
"Obviously, we have a great deal of terribly important work to do as we prepare for the June Expansion and Entry Drafts and, of course for the start of our first season in the National Hockey League this October," said Lindquist. "We couldn't ask for two better people than Jack and Pierre to put together all the pieces that need to be assembled."
Ferreira, with Gauthier's assistance, will oversee all hockey operations for the club, including drafting, player personnel, contract negotiations and the staffing of hockey department personnel for the organization.
"This is the ultimate challenge," said Ferreira. "And with Pierre's support and the backing of The Walt Disney Co. and the hockey fans in Anaheim and the surrounding communities, I am extremely confident that we will meet our goal of playing spirited and exciting hockey in our first season, while building toward becoming a consistent winner."
"Opportunities such as this come along once in a lifetime, if you're lucky," said Gauthier. "The chance to build a new franchise is incredible and the opportunity to work with Jack Ferreira makes it even more exciting for me."
Along with a team representing South Florida, The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim will begin play in the NHL during the 1993-94 season. Home ice for The Mighty Ducks will be The Pond in Anaheim, which, upon completion, will seat 17,278 for hockey. The Pond is scheduled to host its first public event in June.
