VET OFFERS FREE CARE TO FIRE RESCUE DOG BELLA.

``The reason we do it is because we love people and animals,'' said Jan Evanson, office manager for the Sherman Oaks Veterinary Group, which made the offer.

Veterinarian Lisa Woolf checked Bella on Monday and found her in excellent health, Evanson said.

The Daily News reported Thursday that firefighters were trying to raise money to pay Bella's medical bills, which had topped $4,000, because regulations prohibit the use of taxpayer money. The dog's handler, Firefighter Deresa Teller, has been paying off the debt out of her own pocket and with some donations from another station house.

Since then, hundreds of people have offered money and aid to Bella. Fire Department officials said any extra money raised would be set aside for the health care of the department's other canines.
