At 11:56 a.m., 45 minutes after the initial distress call, Delano was contacted by the men involved in the incident. Delano and his daughter, Kathy, motored to the scene in their 33-foot salvage boat. On the beach in Smuggler's Cove, the capsized boat was taking a pounding in the surf line. ``I knew the boat would be ground up in the surf unless something was done right away,'' said Channel Islands National Park Ranger Darcy MacDonald, who assisted the boaters after they swam ashore. ``A boat will fill with sand after a while. The boaters were then pulled off the beach inside their righted boat and transferred to the Delanos' vessel for some hot coffee on the way back to the mainland - a ride home they never expected but for which they were grateful. |
