VESA Releases New Timing Standard; Coordinated Video Timings Standard to Provide Source and Display Manufacturers a Common Set of Tools.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2003 The Video Electronics Standards Association See VESA. (body, standard) Video Electronics Standards Association - (VESA) An industry standards organisation created in 1989 or 1990 mostly(?) concerned with IBM compatible personal computers. (VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association, Milpitas, CA, www.vesa.org) A membership organization founded in 1989 that sets interface standards for the PC, workstation and computing environments. Note the following VESA standards following this entry. ), worldwide leader in video display standards, today announced the release of Coordinated Video Timings (CVT CVT Continuously Variable Transmission (automotive, sport, utility & hybrid vehicles) CVT Center for Victims of Torture CVT Continuing Vocational Training CVT Certified Veterinary Technician CVT Control Value Table ) Standard. The new CVT Standard is a method for generating a consistent and coordinated set of standard formats, display refresh rates, and timing specifications for computer display products, both those employing CRTs and those using other display technologies. It is intended that this standard will give both source and display manufacturers a common set of tools to enable new timings to be developed in a consistent manner that will ensure greater compatibility. Graham Loveridge, VESA Timing Workgroup Leader and a Director at Genesis Microchip, stated that, "Our goal for developing this new approach to display timing standards was to enable rapid deployment of new display technologies while maintaining standards compliance for maximum interoperability. In particular, I can see that the CVT Standard will bring down the cost and complexity of high resolution LCD displays." The CVT Standard is the latest in a series of new or revised standards released by VESA during the last several months. These include the new Display Color Management (DCM), E-EDID EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting. , and Multi-Display Interface standards and the revised Video Signal (VSIS VSIS Vault Safety and Inventory System VSIS Victualling Stores Issuing Ship ), Flat Panel Mounting (FDMI FDMI Flat Display Mounting Interface Standard (VESA standard) FDMI Fabric Device Management Interface ) and Display Power Management (DPM) standards. Availability All of the above standards are now available and can be ordered from the VESA website at www.vesa.org. About VESA Based in Milpitas, California, VESA is an international trade association serving more than 100 member companies participating in the video display market.
