VERTEX INDUSTRIES AND KEARNEY SYSTEMS, INC., TO DEVELOP ORACLE-BASED SHRINK WRAPPED APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE FOR MANUFACTURING

CLIFTON, N.J., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Vertex Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ Small Cap: VETX), developer and marketer of BRIDGE.NET(TM), an applications development and data collection management system, announced today that it had entered an agreement with Kearney Systems, Inc., Orlando, Fla., to create and market a flexible series of shrink wrapped application software for manufacturing processes. Kearney Systems is the developer and marketer of Barware(TM) software, a well- known bar code-based applications product used for a variety of manufacturing functions.
Kearney initially will adapt six of its software packages to Oracle, enabling the database portion of the programs to run under UNIX on RISC-based platforms and utilize Vertex's BRIDGE.NET software for data collection. This represents the first time either company's products will be compatible with the widely used Oracle database package.
Vertex's BRIDGE.NET software provides shrink wrapped generic applications programs, which run transparently on platforms in the DOS, UNIX and OS400 (AS/400) environments. BRIDGE.NET is an advanced data collection management system offering an applications development module that is unique for a shrink wrapped software product. As a development tool it allows the end user to modify the generic applications program to perform specific tasks not already contained in the program. The modifications can be made quickly and do not require highly skilled programming techniques, thereby saving both time and money. The resulting program, in addition to being platform independent, provides peer-to-peer communications, and with the added use of Vertex's BRIDGE.NET Run Time Modules, it also provides direct connect and networking functions for real time data collection for bar code terminals, printers, p.c.'s and midrange computers.
Vertex will add the programs developed in the project with Kearney Systems to its offering of shrink wrapped generic applications programs and make prospective customers aware that the database or host portion of these programs is available form Kearney Systems as part of their Barware Program offerings for midrange computers. Kearney Systems will offer complete software support and, optionally, source code to qualified users. Vertex is funding the project and each company will pay the other royalties on sales of the software produced under the project.
In making the announcement, James Q. Maloy, president of Vertex Industries, said, "This project should be very beneficial for both companies and their customers. They new software products will make it easier, faster and less expensive for manufacturers to automate their data collection and data processing operations."
Among the users of Vertex Industries' BRIDGE.NET applications development tool and data collection management systems are Bell Atlantic and Ameritech for coin collection systems for telephones, Kmart suppliers for compliant labeling and order validation and New York City high schools for access control and time and attendance monitoring.
