VERILINK INTRODUCES FRAMESTART FSM T1 DSU/CSU.Verilink Corporation (Nasdaq:VRLK), a supplier of access products that link corporate and wireless networks to the Internet and other wide-area network services, has introduced a new addition to its FrameStart line of products. Verilink's FrameStart FSM See finite state machine. 1. (mathematics, algorithm, theory) FSM - Finite State Machine. 2. (networking) FSM - FDDI Switching Module. (3Com implements this device on its LAN switches). is a full-featured, SNMP-managed DSU/CSU (Digital (or Data) Service Unit/Channel Service Unit) A pair of communications devices that connect an inhouse line to an external digital circuit (T1, DDS, etc.). that targets customer premise applications utilizing public frame relay or private line services over a T1 facility. "Verilink's FrameStart DSU/CSU product line is an impressive solution for integrators requiring more than just DDS (1) (Digital Data Storage) See DAT. (2) (Data Dictionary System) See QuickBuild and OpenDDS. (3) (Dataphone Digital S and T1 products. Framestart provides an excellent tool that allows integrators to provide end-users with investment protection and mixed service offerings based on the advanced feature set, product scalability, and price position," said Tim Stout, director of product management, Milgo Solutions. Verilink's FrameStart product line is a low-cost family of DSU/CSUs with integral frame relay circuit installation and diagnostic tools. Additionally, the new FSM can be managed from an Internet web browser or any of the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. network management systems. The FrameStart product line helps reduce the time required for installing and configuring Permanent Virtual Circuits, and monitoring the reliability of virtual circuits in a frame-relay network. With regard to price performance, the FSM offers: -- A powerful core architecture: -- 10/100 baseT ethernet port and Async PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using supervisory port -- Software configurable DTE port for RS 232, EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance, Arlington, VA, www.eia.org) A membership organization founded in 1924 as the Radio Manufacturing Association. It sets standards for consumer products and electronic components. 530 or V.35 -- PowerPC platform running at 50MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. with 16 MB RAM -- A suite of performance monitoring tools: -- Monitoring capability for up to 128 virtual circuits (DLCIs) -- T1 performance monitoring, including diagnostics and test modes -- SLA monitoring and Committed Information Rate (communications) Committed Information Rate - (CIR) The guaranteed average bandwidth of a virtual circuit in a frame relay network. The CIR plus the Excess Information Rate (EIR, burst rate) is equal to or less than the speed of the access port into the network. enforcement per DLCI (Data Link Connection Identifier) The number of a private or switched virtual circuit in a frame relay network. Located in the frame header, the DLCI field identifies which logical circuit the data travels over, and each DLCI has a committed information rate The FSM also offers end-users value-added benefits: -- An innovative web-based user interface: -- Decreases installation and configuration time for service employees -- Simplifies troubleshooting and fault isolation of network problems -- Optimizes management of both TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. and frame-based services "With a more robust feature set than competitive products and at a better price, the FSM is the ideal product for both end-users and service providers looking at next generation mixed-mode DSU/CSUs that satisfy both frame relay and leased line applications at no additional cost over single-function DSU/CSU products," said Bucky Garner, Verilink director of marketing. "This raises the bar for the DSU/CSU market." Availability and Pricing Verilink's FSM is priced at $995. In addition to the FSM product introduction, Verilink also reduced the price of its FrameStart FST product to $695, and is offering a FSD-to-FST factory upgrade that is available through Verilink's Customer Service Center.
