VEREX REPORTS START OF AZTEC PHASE III CLINICAL TRIALS FOR TREATMENT OF AIDS AND HIV VIRAL INFECTIONS

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Verex Laboratories Inc. (OTC: VRXL) today reported it had begun a major clinical trial on its new AIDS drug, Aztec(R). This independently conducted multi-site study is being directed by Dr. Alan Hollister at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.
-- The protocol design calls for 200+ patients in a double blind
study which is being conducted concurrently in eight U.S.
cities, including Denver, Salt Lake City, Austin, San Antonio,
Dallas, New Orleans, Montgomery, Ala. and Greenville, S.C.
-- This study will test the safety and efficacy of Aztec directly
against Retrovir(R), the only currently approved first-line
treatment drug now available for HIV and AIDS. While both drugs
are AZT-based, Aztec is unique in that it is a twice daily,
controlled release formulation which was shown in Phase II
studies to be more tolerable and possess a better side effects
profile than the immediate release formulation currently
 available.
-- Each patient will be in the parallel, double blind study for an
18 week period, during which time he or she will be given one of
the two drugs in a randomized fashion. The patients will be
monitored using recognized surrogate markers and other clinical
and physical determinates. It is expected the study will be
 completed in 6-8 months.
The company has high expectations for Aztec and the successful outcome of the study, following encouraging data from its Phase II clinical trials. Verex expects to apply to the FDA for expedited review and approval of this formulation upon completion of this study.
