VENTURA SHERIFF'S SHORTAGE DEPARTMENT ASKS FOR FUNDS FOR RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN.

Byline: ERIC LEACH Staff Writer

VENTURA Ventura (vĕnt`rə), city (1990 pop. 92,575), seat of Ventura co., SW Calif., on the Pacific coast in a farm and oil region; inc. 1866.  -- Even salaries starting at $53,492 a year and a chance to work along the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  coast are not luring enough recruits for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (VCSD) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, USA, as well as several cities within the county. The cities that VCSD serves are Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, and Thousand Oaks. .

``Part of our recruiting advantage is that this is a great place to raise a family, a great place for recreation and a great place to be deputy sheriff,'' said Ventura County Sheriff Bob Brooks, who nevertheless appealed to the Board of Supervisors last week for more money to boost recruitment.

Brooks said although his department has funding for 748 deputies, only 670 of the jobs have been filled.

He asked the board Tuesday for $422,000 to boost efforts with a full-time recruiter, professional marketing, advertising and associated costs of an expanded recruiting effort.

Recruiting law enforcement officers is a problem in many parts of the state, and can be particularly tough in Ventura County, where the median home price around $600,000 discourages some applicants.

``It absolutely is a statewide problem. There are about 15,000 law enforcement vacancies in cities and counties in California The U.S. state of California is divided into fifty-eight counties. Counties are responsible for all elections, property-tax collection, maintenance of public records such as deeds, and local-level courts within their borders, as well as providing law enforcement (through the county ,'' said Brooks, who noted that state and federal law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Ron Nelson Ron Nelson is a composer of both classical and popular music and a retired music academic.

said it is not only difficult to recruit deputies, it is difficult for the applicants to meet the strict requirements to ensure deputies can handle the demands of law enforcement.

``There is huge competition for qualified applicants,'' Nelson said. ``For every 200 people who apply, we get 100 who show up and take the test. And of those who take the test, roughly 4.8 actually wind up graduating from the academy.''

Nelson said although Ventura County might have higher standards than some areas, lowering standards can result in problems after the deputies are hired.

``Even though Ventura County is a very enjoyable place to be, it's a very expensive place to live,'' Nelson said.

While Ventura County's pleasant environment helps keep morale high, the recruiting shortfalls create morale problems, partly from the need for the county's deputies to work overtime to fill in for staff shortages.

``It's important that we do everything that we can to create a competitive advantage in terms of recruiting and retaining employees,'' Brooks said. ``It's a competitive environment. You cannot solve this problem with overtime. We need to relieve the pressure.''
