Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

VENTURA - Ventura County Medical Center Ventura County Medical Center is a hospital in the city of Ventura, California, USA. It is a 208 bed acute care hospital. The county also operates a 49 bed campus in Santa Paula.  and Community Memorial Hospital formed an agreement Wednesday that could signal a truce in the long-standing rivalry between the neighboring neigh·bor

The agreement calls for Community Memorial not to fight construction of a needed county medical lab in exchange for the county's pledge it will not use the new facility to recruit additional patients.

``It think this is the end of the war,'' said Supervisor Steve Bennett The name Steve Bennett refers to more than one person:

, one of two supervisors on a committee that negotiated the agreement. ``We are declaring peace.''

Two months in the making, the agreement will be forwarded to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors The examples and perspective in this article or section may represent an unduly geographically limited view of the subject.

``I feel that a very appropriate and meaningful agreement developed,'' said CMH's Executive Director Michael Bakst. ``We're very gratified grat·i·fy

The county and the private hospital have clashed for years, competing for patients while faced with the high cost of running hospitals due to modernization expenses and decreased funding from HMOs and other sources.

waged a heated campaign to shift control of the county's $250 million tobacco settlement money to the region's private hospitals - a proposal defeated by voters at the polls in November.

The agreement reached Wednesday stems from the county's need to build a new medical lab, cafeteria and kitchen building for its hospital. The county could lose its laboratory certification without a new facility.

Community Memorial Hospital had twice blocked the county's expansion plans, Bennett said.

In 1996, CMH convinced voters to approve a measure that blocked expansion of the county medical center.
