VENTURA COUNTY TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: JACKSON'S BIG JUMP ROYAL SENIOR SOARS TO STATE BEST IN VENTURA COUNTY MEET.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Oliver Jackson settled any debate concerning the state long jump rankings.

The Royal High senior jumped 24 feet-5 3/4 inches, a career best and the state's top mark of the season, to win his third consecutive county title Friday night in the Ventura County championships at Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. .

The UCLA-bound Jackson also won the triple jump (44-6), was second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 39.1 and ran the anchor on the Highlanders' fifth-place 1,600-meter relay.

Jackson entered the meet as the state's second-ranked long jumper (23-11 1/2) but surpassed the mark as well as his county record on each of his three attempts.

His winning jump eclipsed the state-leading mark of 24-4 set by Tony Allmond of St. Paul St. Paul

On Friday, Jackson jumped 24-0 1/2 on his first jump, 24-4 1/2 on his second and 24-5 3/4 on his third, breaking his year-old county record by six inches.

Jackson passed on his final attempt and a chance to extend the meet record, saying that his main priority was to jump more than 24 feet.

``It might have been better . . . . it might not have been better,'' Jackson said. ``I am satisfied to stop where I am. The record does not mean that much. This is a stepping stone. I am not going to be happy until I surpass 25 feet. I set high goals for myself and I am not going to be happy until I achieve them.''

Porchea Carroll of Rio Mesa won the 100 in 12.03, the long jump at 18-6 and ran on victorious 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
