VENTURA COUNTY ROUNDUP: RIO MESA ENJOYS ITS BLOCK PARTY.

After going 1-9 last season and not having a winning season since 1996, first-year coach Randy Block's biggest challenge was getting his Rio Mesa players to believe that high expectations create positive results.

If Block had any doubters, they likely became instant converts when Justin Johnson returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Rio Mesa went on to defeat visiting San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

Channel Islands extended its lead to 12-0 two minutes later on a 23-yard run by Castaneda. The Raiders cashed in on two Wolverines turnovers.

--Nordhoff 30, Moorpark 20: Led by fullback Nick Kaiser, Nodhoff wore down Moorpark with a punishing running game, then finished it off with an unexpected 72-yard pass play to Travis Flowers. Kaiser ran for 174 yards on 29 carries as the Rangers totaled 245 rushing yards.

The Musketeers had a chance to take the lead again just before the half when they had a 1st-and-goal at the 6-yard line. But two consecutive sacks took them out of field-goal range stopped the drive.
