Ventura County has received a one-year extension to spend federal earthquake recovery money so it may complete the final two of 13 major rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy.  projects.

The county needs at least five more months to spend the $450,000 that remains from the $4.3 million it has secured in community development block grants from the federal Housing and Urban Development since the 1994 Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. .

``We've had verbal approval but we haven't received anything in writing,'' said Kay Doyle, a county program management analyst. ``There have been other jurisdictions that have requested and received extensions, so there's no reason why we would not.''

The 6.7-magnitude quake caused approximately $610 million damage countywide.

The block grants were part of an overall $9.1 billion federal earthquake recovery package for the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area.

The two projects under way - both in Piru - entail spending:

$302,000 more for design and grading improvements to a 4-1/2-acre Main Street parcel for 22 low-income homes to be constructed by volunteers working for Oxnard-based Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife. , which assists low-income residents countywide who lost their homes during the earthquake. Costs, not including construction materials, will be $645,000.

on Main Street from Highway 126 north to Camulos Street. The total project will cost $380,000, including $52,000 in HUD Hud (hd), a pre-Qur'anic prophet of Islam. While the projects are expected to be complete by March, county officials want a yearlong extension - to Sept. 18, 1999 - to allow for additional breathing room from HUD-imposed deadlines.

``We don't want money left over that we weren't able to spend,'' said Supervisor Judy Mikels. ``You have to expend ex·pend

Since early 1995, the county has filed monthly requests for reimbursements from the $4.3 million grant for completed work.

HUD generally wires the county the money within three working days, Doyle said.
