VENTURA COUNTY ARTISTS GET SCHOLARSHIPS.

The Ventura County Museum of History and Art has awarded six scholarships totaling $4,000 to art students in Ventura County.

The scholarships are funded through the Bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:
  • Bonita Magazine, an international men's magazine
  • Bonita, California
  • Bonita, Louisiana
 C. McFarland Trust, an endowment at the museum that funds art exhibitions, art purchases for the museum collection, and scholarships.

``I was really impressed with the quality of work that was submitted and the artists' commitment to their art,'' said Tim Schiffer, museum curator.

The recipients were chosen on the basis of an application that included a personal essay, examples of artworks, and commendations from teachers.

``The money will definitely help with my tuition,'' said 19-year-old Courtney Morris, who received a $500 scholarship and will attend Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Morris recently moved to Moorpark after graduating from the Alabama School of Fine Arts The Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) is a public, partially residential high school located in Birmingham, Alabama.  images. Currently she is a scenic artist at Scenic West in North Hollywood and developing her skills in realism.

A $750 scholarship was awarded to Annette Hammer of Camarillo, who will be working toward a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission . The mother of six plans to put her award toward tuition also.

Hammer has had a lifelong interest in art but only started art classes after the birth of her first son who is now 31 years old. She enjoys working in oils and her landscapes have been exhibited at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard.

``Through my art I find a place to center myself, express my inner feelings and appreciate the beauty all around us,'' said Hammer.

Other $750 recipients are Eunsil Kim of Ventura, who will attend Washington State University Washington State University, at Pullman; land-grant and state supported; chartered 1890, opened 1892 as an agriculture college. From 1905 to 1959 it was the State College of Washington. ; Justin Murray of Thousand Oaks, who will enter the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla. in the fall; and Steven Starfas of Ventura, a student at the San Francisco Art Institute

A $500 scholarship also was awarded to Catherine Gassaway of Oxnard, a senior at Rio Mesa High School Rio Mesa High School is located in Oxnard, California and is within the Oxnard Union High School District. It serves the Oxnard communities of River Park, Nyeland Acres, El Rio, as well as the western portion of the city of Camarillo.  who will attend Ventura College in the fall.

In addition, applicants Meryl O'Connor of Thousand Oaks and Ian Ramsey of Ventura, both high school students, received honorable mention for the quality of their work and for their commitment to studying art.
