``It had to happen sometime,'' said North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. ``We just didn't get the luck, didn't get the breaks,'' echoed North Hollywood Coach Len Soloff. ``But (Venice is) a great team, and I wish them all the luck in Washington.''

The Venice team - Nicole O'Keeffe, Jonah Rosenthal, Seth Rotkin, Lorenzo D'Amico and Andrew Bernstein, led by coach Richard Erdman - will next compete in the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl from April 28 to May 2 in Washington, D.C.

Saturday's 13th annual regional contest was held at the downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  headquarters of the Department of Water and Power, which sponsors the event.

North Hollywood and Venice high schools have been fierce rivals for years in the science contest. Both teams are national champions, with Venice winning in 1996 and 1997 and North Hollywood winning in 2001.

``It's too good to be true,'' said a jubilant Lorenzo D'Amico, 17, of the Venice team. ``For years, we've been trying to beat North Hollywood.''

Coach Erdman is planning to retire in a year; team members wore blue ``Revenge of the Erds'' shirts in his honor.

More than 200 Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Spherical trigonometry is concerned with the study of triangles on the surface of a sphere rather than in the , computer programming and science and technology news.

The double-elimination competition is run much like a game show, with two teams facing off with buzzers as a moderator reads questions.

The two powerhouse teams met each other in the final round, which Venice won 116 to 112.

As students answered questions on everything from entropy to Erlenmeyer flasks, black holes to buckyball buckyball, colloquial term for buckminsterfullerene, a roughly spherical fullerene molecule consisting of 60 carbon atoms.
