The event was among a number of programs sponsored by the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Unified School District's Nutrition Network program to combat the rising rate of teen obesity - a trend spawned by sedentary lifestyles and junk-food diets.

``These kind of events are all about creating a buzz and excitement about eating healthy food,'' said Nonnie Korten, director of the Nutrition Network. ``If students can feel a sense of joy in eating healthy food, we really can change the way they think about it.''

The food fair was a collaborative effort of the Nutrition Network and Whole Foods Market, which provided the healthy cuisine.

Other programs offered by the Nutrition Network to improve students' diet and lifestyle habits include student-created school gardens; classroom cooking projects featuring professional chefs; unique physical activity programs; and the Harvest of the Month program, in which schools feature a different fruit and vegetable every month.
