Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) announced today that VCities, a service integrator delivering high-speed, integrated services on its nationwide network of terabit routers, has selected Lucent data networking equipment to deploy in its multiservice IP-based network in 50 new U.S. cities by year end. VCities' network addresses the "infrastructure wall" faced by providers of next-generation Internet services who want to provide high-bandwidth applications in their local or national markets, but cannot afford to build an extensive network of localized application host platforms and Internet access points.

VCities will use a broad portfolio of Lucent's data networking products, including the NX64000(tm) Multi-Terabit Switch Router. On its terabit router IP-based network, VCities will roll out voice, data and video services, as well as Internet access to carriers, application service providers, internet service providers and large organizations across the United States.

The company will offer local broadband access aggregation through its VCities Access Aggregation Platform (VAAP) and facilities capable of delivering high-bit content "end-to-end" within a specific region or nationwide - regardless of access medium: xDSL, wireless, fiber, cable-modem or private line. For deployment in Vcities' network, Lucent will supply its NX64000(tm) Multi-Terabit Switch Routers, CBX 500(tm) Multiservice wide area network (WAN) switches and MAX TNT(tm) WAN access switches. Lucent's NX64000(tm) Multi-Terabit Switch Router -- the industry's fastest multi-terabit router capable of scaling from gigabit to 6.4 terabit per second speeds. The NX64000 has the highest capacity switch fabric, the highest port density, lowest latency and supports Quality of Service (QoS) at line rates, even for OC-48 and OC-192 interfaces, supporting massive volumes of converged voice, video and data traffic. Lucent's market-leading CBX 500(tm) Multiservice WAN (Wide Area Network) switches will enable VCities to manage all services--including ATM, frame relay and IP--from a multiservice ATM network.
