Byline: Daniel Taub Daily News Staff Writer

Nearly a year after five Van Nuys High School Van Nuys High School (VNHS) established in 1914, is a high school in the Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, California, belonging to the Los Angeles Unified School District: District 2.  students won the National Science Bowl competition in Washington, D.C., their successors will compete in the regional competition Saturday to defend the title.

"I think we'll do pretty well. I'm not completely sure if we'll win," said Scott Schneider, 17, of Woodland Hills, the captain and only returning member of the team.

"I'm really just in this competition to have fun," said Schneider, who also was team captain last year at Van Nuys High, where he is a senior.

Physics teacher Arthur Altshiller, the coach, expects the team to do well in the regional competition under Schneider's leadership, which he called "instrumental" in the victory last year.

"We have good chances of winning, but we're the team everyone's gunning for," Altshiller said.
