VALLEY WOMAN GETS COLLEGE BOARD SEAT.

Amid calls for representation from the San Fernando Valley, Georgia Mercer, a Tarzana resident and veteran political activist, was appointed Wednesday to the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. The appointment makes Mercer the only Valley-based trustee on the seven-member board. Student trustee Alma Martinez lives in Sylmar but does not hold a voting seat.

``I'm just overwhelmed that I was able to get it on the first vote,'' Mercer said after her appointment was confirmed.

Of the district's nine campuses, three - Mission, Pierce and Valley colleges - are in the San Fernando Valley.

Mercer last year lost a bid for the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  seat now held by Cindy Miscikowski. She previously served as Mayor Richard Riordan's West Valley liaison and as director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood.

Mercer is a member of CSUN's Foundation Board, vice president of the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the Valley Chapter of the National Women's Political Caucus The National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) is a nationwide multi-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women's participation in the political process by recruiting, training, and supporting women who seek elected and appointed offices. .

Mercer said she is especially concerned for students from disadvantaged communities.

She was appointed to the seat previously held by board trustee Kenneth Washington, who died in April after a heart attack.

``I'm extremely well-qualified to represent this district,'' she said. ``I've paid my dues and I really, really care.''

A candidate needed four votes to win. Mercer received votes from trustees Elizabeth Garfield, David Lopez-Lee, Kelly Candaele and Julia Wu.
