Valley VOTE leaders said Wednesday that they expect to complete their secession petition drive by the Aug. 27 deadline and won't need the 30-day extension sought by the City Council.

Valley VOTE Chairman Richard Close said the group's legal advisers questioned whether the state commission that city officials planned to ask for an extension could actually grant one.

``We need to assume that there won't be an extension,'' Close said. ``We haven't abandoned the idea, but we're not counting on it.''

Board member Steve Pearl, one of those ejected from the airport, is preparing a detailed response to the city investigation, disputing some of the report's details. He said Wednesday he will submit it to federal investigators to illustrate the need for an independent probe.

``The airport department's report raises more questions than it answers, and does nothing more than show how badly an independent investigation is needed,'' he said.
