Byline: Deborah Sullivan Daily News Staff Writer

A team of North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  students inched closer to victory at the national Science Bowl competition, winning its first three finals rounds Sunday night in Maryland.

The team won six of its seven round-robin competitions Sunday before advancing to the finals, which will continue this morning at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Md. The winner will be announced before noon.

Seniors Emily Wang, Greg Marsden, Emily Kuwahara and Michael Saji, all 17, and junior Iris Ahronowitz, 16, were among 18 of 48 teams to make it through round-robin contests to the double elimination finals, and one of 12 teams to make it through Sunday night to this morning's contests.

``It was pretty much as we had expected because there are a lot of good teams and we had some really tough matches,'' Wang said, as she prepared for the double elimination rounds.

The original 48 teams hailed from 38 states, the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. They represented the top 3 percent of the 1,600 science bowl teams throughout the country.

The contestants who made it to the national finals have mastered a dizzying range of scientific subjects.

``The questions that they're asking these kids are very, very hard,'' said Dave Howell, a Science Bowl spokesman with the Department of Energy, which sponsors the event. ``When we design the questions, we don't gear them toward high school kids. We look more at the college level.''

Team captain Greg Marsden said the team studied together about four to six hours a week throughout the year, upping that to four to six hours a day immediately before the competition.

Each match in the game-show style contest consists of 25 multiple choice or short answer questions, mixed among the major scientific disciplines, Wang said.

She said the most difficult part of the contest was refocusing after a lost round, and was guardedly optimistic about their chances of claiming the championship.
