Lewis Chappelear, who teaches engineering design at James Monroe High School James Monroe High School may refer to:

 in North Hills, was also chosen out of the five by O'Connell to represent California in the National Teacher of the Year The National Teacher of the Year is a professional award in the United States. The program began in 1952, as a project by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and aims to reward excellence in teaching. It is sponsored by ING.  competition.

The winner will be selected in the spring.

"I am honored to recognize Mr. Chappelear not only as one of California's best teachers, but also as one of America's finest as I nominate him for the nation's top tribute," O'Connell said.

Monroe High Principal Lynda Schwarz said Chappelear, who has been teaching for eight years, "connects with students, teachers and parents in a way that few others can."

The other honorees are Andee Aceves, who teaches in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  County; Michael Allen Long, who teaches in Whittier; Orange County teacher Gregory McFall; and San Diego teacher Tamara "Tammy" Reina.
